When I woke, the snow had stopped falling.
I didn’t move, feeling the warm rush of Gabe’s even breaths on the exposed skin of my shoulder. My dream still lingered on the edge of my brain and I could feel the sweat-slick on my palms and the residual thundering of my heart in my chest. I let out a little bit of the tension in my body when I realized that my memories hadn’t disturbed his sleep.
I stared out of the window at the snow-covered field and forest. The sun was just tinting the sky with its clear light and caused the ground to sparkle with a million points of frost diamonds. I would miss this place. Not just the Blue Ridge Mountains but also this farm. I knew it like the back of my hand, almost as well as I knew the Five and Diner. Montana would be just as beautifuldifferentbut beautiful. But my heart would always belong to the mountains in front of me.
And the man beside me.
“Good morning.” Gabe’s voice was low, soaked in sleep and startling in the silence. I jumped a little but relaxed when his arms closed even tighter around my body, his warmth seeping into my bones and chasing away a little of the chill left over from my nightmare.
“Good morning,” I answered, leaning into his kiss on my temple.
“Was it bad?” he asked and I tensed at the question, wishing that he wasn’t soGabe. He was not afraid to face the tough stuff.
“It wasthe same.” I started to roll away but he held me in place. It’s a gentle force, a silent plea for me not to leave just yet. He asked so sweetly that I could only comply.
“I dream of sand. In my hair, my clothes, my mouth,” he said, his voice even and deep. “Not as much as when I first got home but they sneak up on me every now and then.”
I don't say anything, knowing he wanted me to share but I don’t know if I can. It’s not that he hasn’t heard it before. Gabe has been around for the bad, the bad, and the uglier on my journey. To talk about it again would be redundant. I stretched, making the move to leave his bed and find my clothes.
He let me go and I scooted towards the ladder at the foot of the loft but his soft voice stopped my progress.
“Just because you saw and did terrible things over there, doesn’t mean you can’t come back here and be happy.”
Wow. He went straight for the jugular on this one. I turned to look at him over my shoulder.
“I want to be happy. I plan to be happy.”
“Why not here?” He sat up and the sheet slid down his body and I couldn’t help but look. He was flawless, sexy, strong. The scars on his body only added to his appeal. He’d been through it and come out on the other side with who he was intact.
“I can’t pretend to be the girl who left Holly Tree seven years ago.
